Deep Electronic Music

Herman is the alter ego of Toronto based Stuart Li. Under his better known moniker of Basic Soul Unit, Stuart crafted Detroit and Chicago inspired deep house and techno on respected labels such as Versatile, Mule Electronic, Mathematics and Philpot Records. Herman definitely retain some of these influences but also explores rhythms beyond the 4/4 basis of the Basic Soul Unit material. Making this music, Li was also thinking about the times during the early 90s when different the genres of house, techno, hip hop, breaks, industrial and more would fuse together to make something fresh (Labels like Warp, Warriors Dance, Shut Up n Dance, and classic tracks like Dove Song, Bang, Bang You’re Mine or Main Squeeze). Much later the Broken Beat scene and now the Dub-step scene would also inform Stuart. That’s not to say Herman sounds like these influences and quote un-quote genres, but their open approach to making music is what inspired this project.
